Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are delighted to announce a special issue of ‘Humanities’ dedicated to graphic narrative, titled, ‘Graphic Narrative in Marginal Spaces: Avant-Garde, Art Books, Graffiti, Untrained or Forgotten Works’. The issue is particularly keen to explore text-image communications that use comic book imagery and techniques as a starting point, but that are not limited to conventional publication or distribution networks, be they from mass cultural industries or more elitist literary graphic novel channels. The geographical-cultural range aims to be as global as possible and will include American, Francophone, Japanese, and other traditions. Articles that explore mixed media uses of comic art in music, theatre, curation, photography, or film will also be encouraged. The formal aim of the collection will be to expand the definitional and analytical range of what we know about graphic narrative, in which creators on the margins are more central than we think, and to explore what this material does to change standard perceptions of comics and graphic novels. Contributions of scholarly articles of 5000-6000 words are welcome. One-page abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to all three editors by 1 December 2018, and finished articles should be completed by 1 August 2019.
