1. An Unexpected Script for an Unexpected Text: The Tomb Autobiography of the Egyptian Royal Secretary Tjay

Sometime between 1213 and 1204 BC, Tjay, a high official responsible for royal correspondence, commissioned an autobiographical text as part of the decoration of his monumental tomb cut into the desert escarpment on the west bank of Thebes (modern Luxor). This alone would have been a surprising choice: autobiography, which been a central monumental genre since the third millennium BCE, was not popular for elite self-presentation at this time. Even more extraordinary was the decision to carve the text in hieratic, the cursive, “documentary” form of the Egyptian script, rather than hieroglyphs, the monumental script par excellence. This seminar presents some of the work in progress of Fredrik Hagen (Copenhagen University) and myself to reconstruct and analyse what remains of this damaged text, drawing especially on epigraphic drawings held in the Griffith Institute archive in Oxford. I consider features of this script and the content of the text, in the tomb context, exploring themes relating to materiality of script, performance and display of artistic and scribal creativity and virtuosity, and implications for Tjay’s self-presentation.

2. Women’s Autobiography and Subjectivity in New Kingdom Monuments,

In the late second millennium BCE, the autobiographical texts that were occasionally inscribed in tombs and temples as part of extravagant displays of status and prestige for their nonroyal owners, became increasingly centred on religious experience. These texts often narrate significant events in the lives of their owners as staged within the temple, from their involvement in temple-building to participation in ritual performances, as well as aspects of pious, observant moral character. Some even describe, in vivid detail, intimate encounters, even conversations, with deities. In this, these complex commemorative and aesthetic creations revived, elaborated, and made play with very ancient formulae of elite self-presentation. I assess how more personal, lived aspects of experience can be identified and assessed in such apparently traditional compositions. I focus on, for example, the emotive and sensuous language of dreaming, initiation, performance, and presence. This is as much a methodological exploration of approaches to the innovative and individual in ancient self-fashioning as it is interpretive of the primary material proper and its functions and meanings within such intricate multimodal settings.
