Résumé :
The era of post WWII Mongolia brought socialist eradication of the remnants and memories of Mongolian traditions. A new generation of “professional artists” educated in USSR returned in 1951 eager to propagate their knowledge of oil painting on canvas through new system of exhibitions and Soviet-style education. A non-governmental, all artists inclusive Union of Mongolian Artists was established, and its leader, an artist Nyam-Osoryn Tsultem (1924-2001) became increasingly concerned with complete destruction of Mongol culture. This presentation examines efforts of artists, including Tsultem, to circumvent the limitations of the socialist regime and establish a culture that is reflective of Mongol identity. The talk will focus on a new tradition termed “Mongol Zurag” that was aimed to define a new Mongolian painting style. Similar to invention of guohua in China and nihonga in Japan as a reaction to the Western art brought into these countries decades earlier, the Mongol Zurag, as Eric Hobsbawm would have put, “…[sought] to inculcate certain values and norms….[to imply] continuity with the past.” This presentation will discuss the emergence and the further development of Mongol Zurag paintings in the past century and in the present millennium based on several cases of Mongolian artists.
